Identity Management for CIOs: Leveraging Federations (Preconference Seminar)

8:30 a.m. – Noon
Korbel Ballroom 3B

Two challenges facing the higher education community are managing security and privacy and integrating software as a service (SaaS), or cloud computing, into the IT organization. This seminar is designed to explain how your identity management system can provide a foundation for these activities. We will explain how you can leverage two solutions developed by higher education—Shibboleth and the InCommon Federation—to create a robust IT architecture that can also enhance security and privacy.

Demonstrations and discussion will provide you with a detailed understanding of (1) how identity management systems fit into a robust IT architecture that can enhance security and privacy, (2) how campuses can leverage standards-based solutions like SAML and the InCommon Federation to simplify collaboration with other campuses or vendors, and (3) how to use the concept of "level of assurance" to support a comprehensive security and privacy program.

More Bang for the Buck: Leveraging Identity Infrastructures

11:40 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Korbel Ballroom 1E/F

With tightening campus budgets, web single sign-on software can provide a solution to local and third-party authentication needs while reducing overall staff effort and making outsourcing easier and more secure. This session will describe campuses using Shibboleth, an open-source standards-based web SSO implementation, to achieve these goals.

IdM Governance in Higher Education

11:40 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Korbel Ballroom 4A/B

As higher education organizations strive to tackle the topic of identity and access management, the nontechnical challenges, in particular IdM governance, have come to the forefront. While many issues related to IdM governance are institutionally and organizationally agnostic, challenges remain that reflect the culture of individual departments and campuses. In this session, utilizing its deep expertise in the higher education market, Burton Group will share its observations and general strategic recommendations for IdM governance within the higher education space spanning the past five years. Topics such as organizational structure, organizational complexity, regulatory adherence, cultural agility, and governance frameworks will be addressed. (Presented by the Burton Group)

Federated Identity and InCommon: Making Sense for the Bottom Line

2:15 – 3:05 p.m.

The challenge for IT is to offer more services in a coherent and effective manner while practicing cost containment. How can a CIO respond to these incongruous requirements? This session will provide leadership case studies of how InCommon plays a critical role in meeting this challenge.

Federating with NIH, NSF, and the National Student Clearinghouse

3:50 – 4:40 p.m.
Korbel Ballroom 1D

The National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the National Student Clearinghouse have all joined the InCommon Federation. This year, CNI played an essential role in shaping, articulating, and advancing the networked information agenda. Working with partner organizations and our members, we explored issues as diverse as institutional repositories, identity management, and learning spaces. We are engaged in work on the cyberinfrastructure needs for scholarship, particularly in regard to data curation and archiving. In this session, open to both members and nonmembers, we will highlight CNI's program and current developments in a broad range of areas related to digital content.
